Now, Sonny Milano hopes to be on the receiving end of a contract offer from the Calgary Flames.

The 26-year-old left-winger has accepted a training-camp tryout with the Flames, somewhat surprising since most figured he would be a popular target as an unrestricted free agent.

Milano notched 14 goals and 34 points last winter during a breakout campaign with the Anaheim Ducks. Among his buries, he batted home that lacrosse-style lob pass from star-in-the-making Trevor Zegras during a December date with the Buffalo Sabres.

During the NHL media tour last week, Zegras told theScore that he was “shocked” that Milano had yet to land a contract for the upcoming season.

“I love that guy. One of the best teammates of all-time,” Zegras said. “Maybe he’s just looking for the right fit.”

There seems to be an obvious fit at the Saddledome, with the Flames looking to fill at least one job among their top-nine forward cast. Milano, listed at 6-foot and 194 lb., could slide in as a second or third-line winger.

Thing is, the Flames have just over US$2 million in projected salary-cap space. As a PTO, Milano will still be able to field offers from other teams. With a strong pre-season showing, he might command more than Calgary’s general manager, Brad Treliving, can afford.

Milano has logged 197 career games on NHL ice, counting 36 goals and 45 assists.

ICE CHIPS: The Flames’ rookie-campers finished with a winless record at the 2022 Young Stars Classic. They wrapped their stay in Penticton, B.C., with Monday’s 5-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. Jakob Pelletier, Emilio Pettersen and tryout invitee Christoffer Sedoff provided the offence for the Flames in their tournament finale.
