Breanne Trotter scored the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining in regulation as the Mount Royal Cougars upset the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 in a U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship quarterfinal in Montreal on Thursday.
Courtney Kollman opened the scoring for eighth-seeded MRU with less than a minute left in the first period at Aréna du CEPSUM.
The top-seeded Varsity Blues responded with second-period goals by Caroline Eagles and Emma Potter to take the lead.
But the Cougars’ Jori Hansen-Young scored just under nine minutes into the third period to tie it, setting the stage for Trotter’s late game-winner.
Athena Hauck assisted on both third-period markers, and Kaitlyn Ross made 20 saves to earn the win. Erica Fryer turned aside 16 shots for Toronto.
With the win, the Cougars advance to a semifinal on Saturday (2:30 p.m. MT) against the host and No. 5 Montreal Carabins, who defeated the No. 4 UNB Reds 4-1 in their quarterfinal on Thursday.
The other two quarterfinals take place on Friday, when the No. 7 St. Francis Xavier X-Women face the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds (1 p.m.), and the No. 6 Nipissing Lakers take on the No. 3 Concordia Stingers (5 p.m.).
