Congrats to newbie Mayor Mark Sutcliffe for passing the city budget with limited opposition. I am not keen on tax increases as a homeowner and I believe significant savings could be made by eliminating frivolous, goofy “save the planet” projects.

That being said, considering some of the ultra lefties on Laurier Avenue, the former talk show host did an upstanding job. It is also really nice to see his approach to the job, shying away from totally unnecessary photo-ops and avoiding confrontation.

OTTAWA

(After the last council, everyone probably appreciates the sense of calm.)

TREACHEROUS TREK

The other night, my family and I went to the Japanese Village steak house on Laurier near Metcalfe to celebrate my son’s birthday. My youngest grandson had never been there, so we thought it would be fun.

We found parking on the street two blocks away. I have joint issues and walk with a cane. The sidewalks had not been cleared, so the trek to the restaurant was very difficult. When we reached Laurier, I was shocked to see the bike paths had been totally cleared. We saw no cyclists, but lots of pedestrians slipping and sliding along the way.

Surely pedestrians are just as important as cyclists. I haven’t been downtown in a long time, and, after that night’s experience, I don’t plan to be back any time soon.

SUE WARREN

(Speaking of the new mayor, maybe he can look into this.)

THEY DON’T CARE

I hope the end is soon because I don’t believe anyone in the Liberal government gives a damn about Canada. I don’t believe good people gave their lives for future generations to be governed by uncaring hypocrites. Why do Canadians pay all that money for elections? Based on our current system, all we have to do is ask China who it wants in.

(It’s not that bad — yet. But, yes, we need a clear action plan to ensure we safeguard democracy.)

GET TEAM CANADA READY

Now Mélanie Joly is ticking off China by mouthing it up at a G20 meeting about China’s alleged interference in Canadian elections. Does she think this will help with our rocky relationship? She is so out of touch that she was telling China’s representative that Canada will not put up with it. Maybe she could just team up with Anita Anand and tell them our military is standing ready. Maybe we could surprise them. We’ll beat them with hockey sticks.

ARNPRIOR

(That’s probably the only way we can beat anyone.)
